Each year,
in tribute to the traditions brought by Swiss settlers in 1845,
New Glarus residents celebrate Swiss Independence Day - the birth
of the Swiss nation on August 1, 1291. The celebration is held
the first Sunday in August at Tell Shooting Park. Digitaries from
Swiss consulates and embassies in the U.S. frequently attend the
New Glarus Volksfest celebration.
The Volkfest
program includes Swiss choral folklore music, yodeling, flag throwing,
thalerschwingen, alphorn playing, and accordian music. The New
Glarus Männerchor is the official sponsor of this event.
Tickets
are available at the gate only. Adult tickets are $7.00, children
$1.00. The park opens at 12:00 and entertainment runs from 1:30
p.m. to 4:00 p.m.. Dancing from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m..
